The grading policy for students participating in Leadership Education is as follows:
Academics (25%): The academics grade includes student efforts on quizzes/exams, oral reports and any assigned homework. Additionally, each cadet will take a comprehensive final at the end of each nine-week period that represents 1/5th of his or her overall academic grade.
Participation (25%): The participation grade is based on the conduct of the cadet during classroom instruction and related JROTC activities to include competitions, sports, school activities, and fund raisers. Attitude, behavior, language and professional military courtesy in interaction with the instructors, other teachers, and fellow JROTC cadets are also considered. Community service projects are important in this day and age and we ask that each cadet perform at least 12 hours of community service each school year.
Uniform (25%): The designated uniform will be worn by each cadet on uniform day (once a week) for the entire school day in accordance with the United States Marine Corps' guidance. Additionally, each cadet will be inspected in his or her designated uniform during the cadet's scheduled Leadership Education class. The weekly grade assigned to the cadet will reflect not only the results of the inspection, but also the compliance with the wearing of the uniform throughout the school day. The uniform is to be worn completely and correctly and, while in uniform, the cadet is expected to exercise approprate military courtesy to the SMI, MI and other JROTC cadets in accordance with established La Cueva Marine Corps JROTC policy. If a cadet fails to wear his or her uniform more than three times the SMI may take measures to have the cadet dropped with a failing grade.
Physical Fitness (PT). Close Order Drill (COD). and Marksmanship Training (25%): Cadets will participate in PT, COD or marksmanship Training. "Participation" is the key word, as cadets are not expected to be Olympic athletes, members of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team nor are they expected to be Rifle/Pistol Experts. For those who do wish to put forth extra effort in these areas, they can earn personal decorations in the form of Marine Corps JROTC ribbons and medals that can be worn on their uniform. PT is reflective of seasonal team sports activities and the three events in the Physical Fitness Test (PFT), which.are: 1) Pull-up (Male)! Flex Arm Hang (Female), 2) Sit-up, 3) 800 meter run. An inventory PFT is given during the first nine weeks of the semester (to allow each cadet to see the areas they need to work on), and an evaluated PFT is given during the second nine weeks to measure the progress the cadet has achieved.
